Brits out in force for Nürburgring
The BTRA drivers will be centre stage at this weekend’s ADAC Truck Grand Prix – with points-scoring races for the BTRA British Truck Racing Championship being featured on all three days of the Nürburgring event. There is a capacity grid of 32 entries for the first of the Mittelrhein Cup races which will take place on Friday (June 30th) – and the vast majority are registered for the BTRA Championship event which takes place as a ‘race within a race’. Friday’s outing is followed by two more races on Saturday (July 1st) and a final outing on Sunday (July 2nd). There have already been no less than seven different drivers taking victories in the fiercely competitive Division One category of the BTRA Championship – and they will all be looking to collect further silverware during the annual visit to Germany. Pre-race favourite must be Ryan Smith (MAN) currently tops the points tables and has been first to the chequered flag on four occasions so far this season – but he only holds an 8-point advantage over Mat Summerfield with fellow MAN racers Shane Brereton and David Jenkins lying joint third overall. The BTRA Division 2 battle is even more closely contested; Adam Bint (Volvo White) holds a one-point lead over Finnish driver Mika Makinen (Sisu) – with Simon Cole (Mercedes) a very close third. Paul McCumisky (Volvo) completes the top four. Adding extra spice to the exciting recipe of the Mittelrhein Cup races will be the involvement of veteran German racer Heinz-Werner Lenz. The local hero claims the 2017 Nürburgring event will be his final competitive outing in his Mercedes-Benz. But Lenz is not the only driver who can claim a lengthy involvement with the ADAC Truck Grand Prix. Richard Collett will this weekend have a party to celebrate his 25th outing here at Nürburgring – and will be surely be cheered on every lap by his dedicated band of enthusiastic German fans, the ‘Collett Army’.
