Smith retains BTRA Division One Crown
with dominant victory at Brands Hatch
Ryan Smith claimed the 2017 BTRA British Truck Racing Championship title with a storming drive in his MAN – overhauling pole sitter Shane Brereton on the exit from Paddock Hill Bend on the opening lap and then scoring a runaway victory.
David Jenkins (MAN) made a strong charge to second – battling his way past first Stuart Oliver (Volvo) and then Brereton to secure the runner-up spot in Saturday’s first Division One encounter. Brereton held on for the final podium spot ahead of Oliver with Simon Reid (Iveco) securing 5th in front of Mat Summerfield (MAN).
Garrett wins hectic Division 2 Race
The Division Two drivers had to cope with extremely slippery and damp conditions for the opening event on Saturday – which saw an epic five-way fight at the front with Luke Garrett (MAN) eventually outrunning Tony Smith (Sisu), newly crowned champion Mika Makinen, Steve Powell (ERF) and Adam Bint (Volvo White).
The race was red flagged twice; the first stoppage came after Andrew Fulcher’s MAN was beached in the gravel trap at Clearways – and then the second run saw both John Powell (DAF) and Wayne Eason (MAN) get stranded in the gravel in separate incidents on the downhill exit of Paddock Hill.
