Dominant Ryan Smith takes Race 1
Mittelrhein Cup win for BTRA British Champion
Ryan Smith (MAN) scored a convincing flag-to-flag victory in Friday’s Mittelrhein Cup race – pulling over 25 seconds clear of the pack to claim his fifth win of the season. Most attention was focused on an entertaining battle for 2nd place – which looked all set to be collected by David Jenkins until he was spun around by Shane Brereton, losing him valuable time and dropping him to 4th. Brereton subsequently collected a 30 seconds time penalty, dropping the MAN driver to 7th in the official classifications. That left Mat Summerfield to collect the runner-up spot, just 0.944s ahead of an onform Oly Janes (Freightliner). Simon Reid (Iveco) and Terry Gibbon (MAN) completed the top six while Stuart Oliver – forced to start from the pit lane after transmission troubles – made a huge charge through the field of 28 starters to come home 8th.
Dutch delight in Division Two
The Division Two BTRA honours went to Dutchman Frans Smit (Scania) – ten seconds ahead of his brother Rody Smit (Volvo), who had managed to pass Mika Makinen (Sisu) on the very last lap to grab second place by just 0.175s. Steve Powell (ERF) and Adam Bint (Volvo White) were the top Brits in this category, taking fourth and fifth respectively.
