FLYING SMITH TAKES POLE POSITION …and another Smith on top in Division 2
Reigning BTRA British Truck Racing Champion Ryan Smith set a sizzling pace in the Friday morning Qualifying session to claim pole position for the first of the Mittelrhein Cup races at Nürburgring today. The MAN driver posted a best lap of 1m.56.277s – some 1.522s seconds quicker than his nearest rival, Oly Janes (Freightliner). The MAN pair of David Jenkins and Mat Summerfield were both within half a second of Jane’s time – so a major battle for the podium positions can be expected.
Among the BTRA Division 2 competitors we can look forward to a real ‘battle of the bonneted trucks’. Pacesetter was Tony Smith (no relation to Ryan!) with his Sisu – just 0.1 sec ahead of Dutchman Frans Smit (Scania) with Mika Makinen (Sisu) posting third quickest time – the Finn only 2/10th behind Smith.
