Oliver is Ring Master in the rain!
Flying Finn Makinen on top in Division 2 A treacherously slippery
circuit and some typically wet Nürburgring summer weather presented all
the competitors with a major challenge just to stay on the tarmac during
the second Mittelrhein Cup race. Stuart Oliver looked comfortable out in
front, building a sizeable lead in the early laps – but ‘Full Circuit
Yellow’ caution periods provided his rivals with the opportunity to
close up on the Volvo driver; Shane Brereton jumped ahead briefly on lap
8 but was soon relegated back to second – where the MAN driver stayed
until the chequered flag with Mat Summerfield (MAN) taking third.
Summerfield had been involved in a fierce and long-running battle with
David Jenkins in the early laps… but Jenkins eventually fell back and
went out when he got beached in the gravel trap. Championship leader
Ryan Smith slid his way to fourth, but felt that some of his rivals had
gained an unfair advantadge by not complying to speed restrictions
during one of the two FYC (‘Full Circuit Yellow’) periods.
Division 2 honours went to the Mika Makinen – the Finnish driver b
ringing his Sisu home some 4.5 seconds clear of runner-up Frans Smit
(Scania) – with the Dutchman’s brother Rody claiming the final podium
spot in his Volvo.
