The penultimate round of the 2017 BTRA British Truck Racing Championship will take place at Pembrey Circuit (Near Llanelli, South Wales) on October 14/15 – the second visit of the season to the Welsh venue.
Those who were there back in April will know that the tight and twisty track always seems to produce plenty of thrills and spills – and the trackside banking provides spectators with a birds-eye view. The notorious first turn (Hatchetts Hairpin) is almost guaranteed to create some kind of ‘physical’ action when a tightly packed field of heavyweights come thundering into it!
The forthcoming Pembrey event is likely to see the 2017 champions crowned in both categories of the BTRA Championship – with Ryan Smith and Mika Makinen looking comfortable at the top of the Division One and Division 2 standings respectively. Both will be heading for Wales with the aim of collecting maximum points and securing their titles before the Brands Hatch finale in November.
Smith has been a multiple winner in the UK this year as he defends his 2016 title – and he’s also been a winner in Europe with his MAN truck.
Fellow MAN drivers Shane Brereton (also a winner in the FIA Euro event last month in the Czech Republic) and Dave Jenkins are still in with a shout at the BTRA Division One Championship – as is 12 times British Champion Stuart Oliver (Volvo).
In Division 2 Makinen’s SISU has been the pacesetter all season – but Tony Smith’s similar machine has also taken several victories as has Simon Cole (Mercedes). 2016 Division 2 Champion Adam Bint can be expected to put on a strong show in his Volvo White – along with John Bowler (Foden) and Luke Garrett (MAN) who both feature in the top six in the points rankings.
But with a packed and very competitive field of entries in both classes plus the exciting ‘Reverse Grid’ format in operation from race 2 onwards…there’s no guarantee of a podium place for anyone!
