The track conditions were much improved for the third Mittelrhein Cup race on Saturday afternoon at Nürburgring – which proved to be relatively incident-free despite a couple of spinners on the opening lap of the still damp circuit. Ryan Smith took an immediate lead from the rolling start and maintained a strong pace (including posting fastest race lap) to finally finish over four seconds ahead of his experienced rival Stuart Oliver – thereby adding another winners’ trophy to the one he collected on Friday. Oliver in turn had a clean and almost unchallenged run to the flag – finishing some 11 seconds clear of third placed David Jenkins. Shane Brereton maintained his consistent performances and remains a serious contender for the championship title with a solid fourth – ahead of Oly Janes and Mat Summerfield.
Makinen top Division 2 again
On-form Mika Makinen completed a Saturday ‘double’ in the BTRA Division 2 category with another class win. But there was at last a British driver on the Division2 podium as Steve Powell brought his ERF home in a strong second place, well clear of his Dutch rival Frans Smit.
